List Tips and Instructions

There are two versions of the ASMUG-Talk list:

  • Regular - where individual messages come as soon as they are posted
  • Digest - where you receive one longer messsage each evening, that has all of the day's messages

Some people prefer the digest form, as a way to organize and limit the number of messages coming in. There are some disadvantages to the digest method, though. Sometimes messages that are more highly formatted (rich text or html formatting) will look odd and full of code in the digest. Also it is hard to reply to an individual message or question when reading it in digest mode.

Perhaps a better way to organize messages from the ASHMUG-Talk list is to set up a filter or rule based on the presence of [ASHMUG] in the subject line. If you use the Mail application in Mac OS X, look under Preferences and the Rules icon. Set up a message box for ASHMUG and then move incoming messages with [ASHMUG] in the subject to that box. Then all of your messages are there and you can read them at your leisure.

How the list works

When you send a message to the list, the message automatically goes out to everyone on the list.

When you reply to a message (just using the regular reply button on your email program) your reply goes back to everyone. If you want to reply privately to the message sender, you will need to paste in their address in the To: field.

We block attachments in thist list. This helps make sure that a virus-laden attachment does not get sent out to everyone. Sometimes you may get an error message back saying that your message had an attachment/enclosure. If that wasn't the case, then it is possible that your richly formatted email message is being mistaken for an attachment. Try switching to plain text for sending your email to the list.
