Mark,
Go to Apple icon in Left upper corner Click on System Preferences Find TIME MACHINE in lowest row and click on it to open Make sure tiime machine is turned on per the on/off toggle switch that you see. Also, check box to show time machine in status bar is helpful to me so check it. Plug in your external hard drive which I assume is new or has plenty of space. You should see the time machine icon start to turn in your menu bar within a minute. If not, click on Icon to open and click on Back Up Now. If that does not work then get help from someone else.

If you have the little Clock with the circular arrow around it up in your menu bar on the right side you can click on that and in the little pull down menu choose "Open Time Machine Preferences". If you don't have this, go to your System Preferences (probably in your Dock) and find Time Machine in there. That has a place to Change Disk, and you can choose the new external HD.
Before you do that, here's another consideration. And I'd appreciate comments from others on this. Is the external HD a FireWire drive? If so... If 500 gB is way bigger (several times?) than your computer's hard drive, consider partitioning it into two partitions. You would do that using the Disk Utility application found in your application folder and within that in the Utilities folder. Create one partition labeled something like "Bootable" and make it comfortably big enough to hold your entire hard drive with some squoosh room to spare. Then make another partition (you can label it Time Machine Backup or something more clever.) Have this partition be the size of the remaining external space - hopefully a good deal bigger than your current HD.
Then when you open the Time Machine preferences and choose the Change Disk, point Time Machine to this second partition. When you first run Time Machine it will take a long time for the first backup since it is starting from scratch. From then on each incremental backup will be very fast.
Now the reason I recommend the the partitioning is that you can't use the Time Machine as your startup disk in the event your hard drive fails on your computer. Your files will be safe (fingers crossed!) but you won't be able to start up the computer holding the option key down and choose the external drive as your start up drive.
If you pay the small fee for a copy of SuperDuper http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/ you can run a separate backup every now and then to the first partition - the one labeled Bootable or whatever. SD can make a copy of your hard disk that is bootable.
I have Time Machine on pretty much all the time, and it does its thing with only a couple of hiccups. Then once a week or so I run SuperDuper, so that I know I have a bootable copy. Then if my internal HD fails I can still run in the short run, until I figure out a strategy to replace the HD and/or get the Mac into the shop.
What do others do?
....Doug

FYI: Side bar to the TM discussion: I'm not on Leopard, ergo not using TIme Machine, but my cousin who is a hip programmer/developer in both Mac and Windows, recently discovered that a Windows sleep utility could corrupt his Mac partition on his MBP.

My time machine will no longer back up. It works if I plug the drive directly into the laptop, but not through the airport extreme.
When I select Back up Now, this is the log messages I get.
Mar 3 23:02:54 bruce-mcalevys-macbook-pro-15 /System/Library/ CoreServices/backupd[410]: Backup requested by user Mar 3 23:02:54 bruce-mcalevys-macbook-pro-15 /System/Library/ CoreServices/backupd[410]: Starting standard backup Mar 3 23:02:54 bruce-mcalevys-macbook-pro-15 /System/Library/ CoreServices/backupd[410]: Error -35 while resolving alias to backup target Mar 3 23:02:59 bruce-mcalevys-macbook-pro-15 /System/Library/ CoreServices/backupd[410]: Backup failed with error: 19
When I attempt to open the drive in the finder in the left column of a windos, it says connection failed.
When I click the connect as, these messages show up
Mar 3 23:11:50 bruce-mcalevys-macbook-pro-15 NetAuthAgent[429]: Cannot find factory 69DFF912-F8B5-11D5-B151-003065A0E6DE Mar 3 23:11:50: --- last message repeated 1 time --- Mar 3 23:11:50 bruce-mcalevys-macbook-pro-15 /System/Library/ CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/MacOS/Finder[252]: SharePointBrowser::handleOpenCallBack returned 45
Incidentally, my hard drive is full, and time machine has to delete some stuff before it can back up, so a time machine cycle with the drive directly attached takes more than 20 minutes.
I have the 'warn when backups deleted' box checked, but I do not get the warning even when directly attached, but I know it is deleting stuff because the size of the backup is greater than the space available, and it does complete to the directly attached drive.
Any ideas?

I have timemachine on my macbook, am running 10.5.8
I have an external hard drive hooked up. I often disconnect my laptop and use it in the other room. Before I disconnect, I click on the icon on my desktop, and click on the window to allow me to take plugs off safely. (cannot rememer the words used in the window).
Often when I plug everything back in, the hard drive icon doesnt show on the desktop and time machine doesnt work.
My external harddrive light is on, and its two plugs are in, and it is in at the hub, and the hub is connected to the computer. If I bypass the hub, it still doesnt work.
This happens about one out of four times I disconnect, and then seems to come on by itself at some point, but today the icon is not coming back to the desktop and time maching says it cannot connect to do its job. In preferences it is in the on position. Is there a trick to get it to come back on when I replace the plug from the external hard drive? My mac mentor doesnt know what to do. Sandra

I'm interested in hearing the solution to your question. You followed all the correct steps, as I know them. I only connect my laptop to the HD for Time Machine once a day. Usually the icon pops right up on the screen but occasionaly it takes a moment or two. I plug the HD directly into my MBP port. Not the USB but 400 FireWire ?
Would it help to know what brand of HD you use? Would this be a HD failure or system failure? I'd like to hear what others have to say.

What has worked for me is the following:
1) Eject the Time Machine external hard drive as you have been doing. 2) Disconnect the USB cable from the Time Machine hard drive to the USB hub. 3) Turn off the Time Machine hard drive.
Then when you want to attach the Time Machine hard drive to do a Time Machine Backup, do the following: 1) Plug in the USB cable from the Time Machine hard drive to the USB hub. 2) Make sure that your USB hub is connected to your laptop. 3) Turn on the Time Machine hard drive.
If you don't see the icon for the Time Machine external hard drive on your desktop, then I would suggest disconnecting the USB hub from the laptop and then reconnecting the USB hub to the laptop.
Sometimes you don't know if the problem is the external hard drive or the relationship of the hard drive and the USB hub. I try to isolate things by turning them off. Because then, when you turn them on, they send a signal through the "channels" to the laptop that they are now alive and exist, and it is then that I see the external hard drive show up on my desktop.
I hope this helps. If it doesn't, try bringing the laptop and your Time Machine external hard drive and USB hub (with all the plugs and wires necessary to make them work) to the next meeting and we can use it to demonstrate how to trouble shoot this issue and see if we can find why it's happening, and if not, just how to make it work properly.

I too am interested in this question. I've read of others not having their time machine work after disconnecting the HD, so I'm afraid to disconnect it. That HD is connected by 800 FW and there is an available 400 FW port, so I don't have to disconnect it, but that doesn't help you with a laptop.
I have trouble with USB devices too. Remember when we thought SCSI was a black art? I think USB and Firewire are too, especially if you're trying to get iMovie to control a camcorder.
I've found that when inserting an SD card into the USB reader, I have to do it quickly. If I push it in too slowly, it won't show up. With the Kindle, I've had good luck once I learned that it must be active when I plug it in.
Other times, you might be able to see a hard disk using disk utility and mount it that way. However, I usually noticed that disk utility would see the drive but be unable to mount it so I could see it in the Finder.
The one thing that has worked for me if the card reader doesn't see the SD card is to reboot the computer. The next time I insert the card after the reboot, it shows up in the Finder.

I had pulled cords from various parts without anything new, but I just turned the hard drive switch off and on, and the clone and time capsule icons came back on to the desktop, and the hard drive is making a kind of a grinding noise and the blue light on the back of the harddrive is blinking on and off.
Oh, the grinding and blinking just stopped. I didnt have the common sense to check my window to see if it was just backing up.
I just ejected them again and then plugged the hub back on, and they came right up. So what I know now is if I turn the hard drive switch off and on, the discs might come back on, but does that mean a problem with the hard drive? Probably no way to tell. I will keep playing with it.
Im writing a book, so it puts my nerves on edge. (especially when my whole book written so far disappeared for a while one day. I always have paper copys.
All I know is I have a Lace hard drive, and John Taylor helped me get it, so it should be a good brand. Thanks for feedback. Sandra

Make some CD copies as well (and/or another hard disk, flash drive, etc.) Never depend on just one backup method.

CDs would be much less expensive to use than having to retype your data.
You could always scan your printouts and do optical character recognition on them and then I think you could just do a <command><copy> and a <command><paste> into a new document.
I have a scanner and if for any reason your system fails and all you've got are the printouts let me know and I'll see what magic there is in scanner land.

Yvonne, isnt Mobile -Me safe, since it is away from my computer? Im paying a $100 a year for it, and I thought that it would be perfect to protect my quickbooks info also.
I do have a scanner on my HP Officetjet Pro, so I will keep your info in case my whole Mac World falls apart. That is an interesting concept, as I did lose one small page that I must have deleted accidentally, which is probably the most likely scenario. "I don't need this"--click. "Now I will empty trash"-click.

Off site backup is another good idea. You can't have too many good ideas. You'd be surprised how many things you thought were secure actually weren't. It's happened to me on several occasions where I've lost data permanently. The stuff you really can't be without should have multiple forms of backup.

Read my mind, Liza! I was just beginning research to learn how to use Time Machine, being frustrated by the progress bar, which showed so little in backing up that I calculated it would be 5 days before it finished. So I've joined Mac forums, and I'll go back to check out ASHMUG archives as I think I saw posts about this before I knew I'd need them.
I'm hoping to find a way to separate initial backup from updates, so I may end up using an alternative. Thanks!

If you're talking about the difference between .67 and .7, that's just rounding up on the Time Machine. If you're talking about the difference between 03GB free and 47 GB free, that's because they are two different hard drives. One has more storage space than the other. Even though your external drive might have been labeled as the same general size as your Mac's internal drive, the labels applied to hard drives are only wildly approximate. (A few gigabytes here, a few gigabytes there, and pretty soon you're talking about real storage space :-)

I hope this illustrates what you were discussing:
Here is a Screen Shot taken 1st selecting my MBP HD --> then choosing Get Info Note: Capacity 199.72 GB--> Used 79.66GB --> Available 120.04 GB
Below the HD Icon on my Desktop --> 199.71G 4 GB free The image on the desktop seems to be abbreviated:)

Maybe I don't understand your question.
Let's assume you realize you are dealing with two different hard drives. One is larger than the other (Capacity 199.71 vs 319.94).
You have 79.66 GB of data on the internal HD and 144.91 GB of data on the Time Machine HD.
Time Machine backs up different versions of files without throwing away the old versions. So if you are working on a document, Time Machine is writing a copy of the document every hour. If you work on it for 4 hours, you have 4 versions of the document in Time Machine but only the latest version on your internal hard disk. So the Time Machine data keeps growing because you're always adding new copies of anything that changes.
The other day, I accidentally saved a smaller version of a photo. My practice is to never modify my original photos, but instead to use Save As to make new copies of modified photos. Time Machine had not only my latest version in which I had accidentally thrown away most of the pixels, but it also had a copy of the original photo. I was able to restore the full size photo back where it belonged.

Thanks for suggestions. Sorry I was less than clear on question. My Time Machine Backups icon on desktop shows only 03 GB free. When I go to Systems in Time Machine that is showing 79 GB free. This only refers to external hard drive doesn't it? Lois

Unfortunately, trying to describe what we are experiencing on our Macs via email, even with pictures, is rather limited sometimes. Mostly that's because of our different vocabularies. So we'll do the best we can here.

I don't know what icon you are referring to. I don't normally display the icons of hard drives on my desktop, but I turned them back on to see if I could figure out what you're looking at. Here's a picture of my TimeMachine icon as it appears on my desktop. The only way I know of to see its statistics is to do Get Info for that icon. You already showed us your Get Info and I didn't see anything like 03 GB free. Here's the Get Info for my TimeMachine partition. Are you talking about either of these areas?
Can you show us a picture of what your icon looks like so we can see that 03 GB free?

I don't know what you mean by "go to Systems in Time Machine." Can you give us a step-by-step procedure? Is that something you can take a picture of?
Maybe you are running Snow Leopard and it's different. I'm still on Leopard, so someone else will have to step in and help with Snow Leopard.

Go ahead and click Restore. If the file you are restoring exists in the same place "Now", a dialog will appear asking whether you want to replace it or "Keep Both". By using "Keep Both" you won't delete your "present incarnation" -- instead it is renamed with "(original)". It can be bit confusing as to which is which, but just look at the modify dates of the 2 files and you'll know.
I think there's also a cancel button in that same dialog if you really don't want anything to happen at that point.
