USB Transfer rates and Large Hard Drives

My project for today was to take an inventory of my hard drives that
have been accumulating over the last 8 years or so.
My goal is to make sure that there is redundancy of files so that if
one hard drive fails, the data will not be lost. So, my task today
has been to transfer data from older drives to newer drives.

As hard drives have gotten much larger and much less expensive, I have
purchased larger and larger drives. And now comes the interesting part.

The least expensive external hard drive with the largest capacity is
usually the one that has ONLY a USB port. Usually, there is an
equivalent capacity drive that also has Firewire 400 and Firewire 800
in addition to USB. I never saw the value in paying the extra money
for all those other ports.

That is until now.

In looking at transfer rates for USB2 compared to Firewire 800 there
is a dramatic difference. I was looking at 23 hours to transfer about
100 GB via USB2. I'm now transfering 30 GB using Firewire 800 in 15
minutes. So......it appears that spending some extra money saves a
lot of frustration.

As the drives have gotten much bigger, it will take far longer to make
transfers using USB2! I have 1 Terabyte and 1.5 Terabyte drives that
are just USB2.....bummer!

Pays to think ahead. And learn from others' tribulations.

Yvonne

Yvonne,
Where did you buy the Firewire 800?
