Changing Names of Docs

Date: November 15, 2009   permalink

From: Marianne Weidlein <aimari@[Protected]>
Hi - Tiger was recently installed in my iBook G4. It's great, but I
now have a very inconvenient problem. I can no longer consistently
change the names of my docs, including photos, everything. Sometimes
it lets me, but after a dozen tries! Argh! I was just holding down
the cursor with a left click, and it would open the doc name and I'd
change it. But now, it just keeps opening the doc. I tried both left
and right clicks, and no dice!

Thank you so much for your help, Marianne

You just have to click on the document name once. That changes the
color to light blue. You can now type in a new name.

The other thing that may be affecting this, Marianne, is your setting
on double clicks for the mouse. As Linda mentions, you can single
click on a file name you see in the Finder, and it turns a light blue.
However, if your mouse double click is set too far in one direction,
it may be hard to manage the required dexterity.

Now, having said that I can never remember which way to adjust the
mouse double click, so I'm afraid you'll have to experiment. Go to
System Preferences and click on Keyboard & Mouse. Then click on the
Mouse tab near the top of the window. Then adjust the Double-Click
speed to see where you are most comfortable. If it is all the way to
one side or the other, start by putting it in the middle.

That was always been frustrating for me too, Marianne. I'm on 10.4.11
btw. What helped me was to change from a faster double click speed to
right at the middle (see screen shot). Go to system preferences >
keyboard & mouse

Liza, thank you! That's exactly what I did. And metaphorically,
sometimes, staying "in the middle" really is the best choice!

Dear Group,

There is another way that is quite simple to change file names without
having to use a mouse click + another mouse click. Just find the file you
want to rename and use the enter key. It will highlight only the portion of
the filename before the dot + extension. Rename your file and hit the enter
key again to save. Renaming or naming files this way does not result in an
accidental opening of files.

My regards to all,
Stephen Strum

Wow, Stephen, that's a piece of cake! Thank you. With seconds here
